Deschutes River
![]() |
The Deschutes River, one of Oregon's most prolific trout streams, has been recognized by the state and federal governments for its unique and beautiful characteristics. The Deschutes flows through the heart of Jefferson county, and lures thousands of anglers and whitewater thrill seekers to the region every year. |
| Fishing Rainbow trout, steelhead and spring salmon draw the most interest, each holding the top run during peak seasons of activity. The Deschutes is open to fly and lure fishing only, and special regulations make it necessary to check the annual synopsis for open dates and bag limits. Adjacent to the Warm Springs Reservation, a special Native American fishing permit is required, along with a valid Oregon Fishing license. Rafting If whitewater rafting is something you want to try there are a number of guides in the areas who will take you down one of the premier whitewater runs in the West. If you have your own raft, a permit is required, which can be purchased at several Madras locations. Boating If you enjoy boating, lake Billy Chinook and Lake Simtustus are for you. Both lakes are within 15 minutes driving distance from Madras. |
