HOW DO I CREATE A PERSONAL HOME PAGE.

All accounts on PCI include a free personal home page. Using html editors included with IE 4.0 and Netscape or Word Perfect, MS Publisher & MS Word are excellent ways to create your home page.

Currently PCI does not allow cgi scripts other than the one mentioned in section.

A few hints and tips

Try searching for HTML tutorials and help pages on the Web.
Search engines: Yahoo, Infoseek, Lycos

A useful book: "Teach Yourself Web Publishing with HTML in a Week" by Laura Lemay (SAMS Publishing).

A final technique for learning how to produce web pages: look at the "source" code (in Netscape under the View menu) when looking at someone else's page on the Web. This will display the HTML code used to create that page.

WHAT DIRECTORY DOES MY HOME PAGE RESIDE IN?

  • To allow others on the net to access your homepage, the file(s) must reside in a directory called "public_html" off of your home directory. This directory has already been set up with a temporary index.html file
  • The main page must reside in the public_html directory.
    File name: index.html

By naming the main page "index.html" this page will automatically be loaded when users go to your web site.

  • Your url is:
    http://palmain.com/~username/

Use your FTP client software to create a directory or log on to your account.

How to send your completed pages to the palmain server and thereby to the WWW!

Once you have finished creating your web pages and have them saved on your computer, you must copy them to your "public.html" directory and/or sub-directories on the main server.

1. Run your FTP client program and transfer all of your web page files to your public_html directory or sub-directories.

Logout. You're done!
